What I Do
I work at One More Cloud, where we operate search engines at scale. We manage massive fleets of Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, and Solr clusters so our customers don't have to.
Our platform handles billions of search requests per day, all over the world, and my job is to ensure those happen fast and accurately, with real-time metrics about the performance of every request.
The work includes cloud infrastructure, deployment automation, search performance tuning, and debugging production issues at 2am, and occasionally making queries 350% faster.
Before all this, I:
- got a degree in aerospace engineering with a concentration in astronautics (aka rocket science)
- interned at Honeywell Aerospace
- did project management at a startup
- built a website that survived a slashdotting
- found zero-day vulnerabilities at eBay and MySpace, and a security hole at Facebook
- ... and a few other things
What I'm Good At
- Knowing "the server is slow" means 12 different possible problems (and finding the root cause fast)
- Writing docs, blog posts, and support replies that make hard things easier
- Search infrastructure (Elasticsearch/OpenSearch, Solr, Lucene internals)
- Linux system administration and security hardening
- Distributed systems debugging
- Making complicated technical things understandable
Things I've Made
- A bunch of Ruby gems that have collectively been downloaded over 250K times
- A bunch of internal tooling nobody else will ever see
- More documentation than anyone should have to write
- This occasionally-updated blog, where I think out loud in public
